Cursor · coding editor and agent product
Cursor
Cursor brings coding assistance into work on an existing repository through editor, CLI and cloud-agent surfaces. Agent can search files, edit code and run commands; Ask provides a read-only exploration option. For a first task, choose a small change in a disposable branch and make the repository's own checks part of the request. The result to review is the diff and test evidence, rather than the agent's description of success. Run modes affect how work proceeds, and cloud agents have a different, more autonomous execution surface than local use. Privacy Mode concerns training; it does not establish that code context stays on the machine. Choose the surface alongside the repository access and command authority the task requires.

When it fits
Useful for
- Exploring and changing an existing codebase with editor context
- Working through a bounded fix whose diff and regression checks can be reviewed
Limits to consider
- Assuming local editing means no code context leaves the machine
- Granting a cloud agent production access before defining the repository task
Capabilities and platforms
- Agent searches repository files, edits code and runs commands
- Ask supports read-only code exploration
- CLI and cloud-agent surfaces extend the product beyond editor interaction
Where it runs
- Editor
- CLI
- Cloud-agent surface
Access and setup
Cursor account and applicable product entitlement; repository, command and cloud-agent access depend on the chosen run mode and organization controls.
Current access and pricing- Open an authorized repository on a disposable branch using the official editor or CLI setup.
- Use Ask to locate the relevant code and existing tests before choosing an edit-capable mode.
- Give Agent a bounded change, name the regression and normal-path checks, and inspect the resulting diff and command record.
Proposed exercise · not hands-on tested
Repair a synthetic parsing bug
Input
A disposable repository with a known input that produces the wrong parsed result.
- Use Ask to explain the failing path and locate the existing parser tests.
- In an appropriate edit mode, request a focused fix and a test covering the supplied failure.
- Run the parser checks and inspect the diff for unrelated edits or weakened assertions.
Artifact to inspect
A proposed patch and regression evidence for human review.
What to verify
Confirm the failing input now has the expected result, normal inputs still work, and changes stay within the requested code.
Data handling and permissions
Cursor's Privacy Mode addresses model-training use, rather than promising that repository context never leaves the computer. The editor, CLI and cloud-agent routes should be assessed as different execution surfaces, particularly where commands, credentials or repository material can be reached. Check the current privacy documentation and organization controls before opening confidential code. A disposable branch makes edits reviewable but is not a data-transmission boundary. Keep production credentials outside the proposed parsing exercise, inspect command output for unintended exposure and review any cloud-agent access separately. This documentation-based profile does not establish the behavior of a particular account configuration or certify generated code as safe to merge.
