Use AI feedback in a code review

Another reviewer is useful when they help uncover a problem or make a change easier to understand. This path follows CodeRabbit’s feedback on a small pull request, from the first comment to a checked revision. It also considers the time spent investigating suggestions that turn out to be wrong, so you can judge what the extra review adds.

Use a project you’re allowed to work on, and keep the first change easy to undo. Check what the tool proposes before applying it, and don’t send private data you aren’t allowed to share.

  1. Connect a repository the team can use

Follow the CodeRabbit setup guide and choose a repository approved for the trial. Read the data policy and integration permissions while leaving branch protections and human review in place. Starting with one repository gives you a manageable view of how the extra comments affect work the team is already doing.

  2. Explain the question behind the change

Use a small PR with a clear description and test results. A hypothetical retry change offers a useful example: should every attempt share the caller’s original deadline, and could retrying perform a write twice? Explain the intended behavior so reviewers can compare the implementation with something more specific than “make requests more reliable.”

  3. Find out whether a comment describes a real failure

Follow each plausible finding into the code. What input starts the path, and what happens before the suspected problem appears? Ask for missing details, then try to reproduce the issue with a test. Keep track of both useful findings and time spent ruling out incorrect ones; that is the work the review actually creates.

  4. Review the revision that contains the fix

After making a fix, rerun the checks and make sure the next review refers to the updated commit. An incremental review examines new changes; a full review covers the entire change again. Choose the scope according to what remains uncertain, remembering that reviews consume the plan’s allowance.

  5. Compare the result with the existing review process

Across the first reviews, look for issues CodeRabbit helped uncover and explanations that saved a colleague time. Weigh those benefits against cost and the effort of investigating extra comments. Expand to other repositories if you can name what improved; otherwise, adjust the review instructions or keep the process you already have.
