Runway

Official documentation

Runway offers direct image/video tools, task-specific Apps, a conversational creative Agent and node-based Workflows. These are different ways to organize a production job rather than interchangeable model names. Its current starter guide documents Gen-4.5 text-to-video and image-to-video; older Gen-4 and Gen-4 Turbo should retain their own input requirements and limits. For a first shot, use Tools and describe the intended motion against an authorized reference. Once that result is useful, Workflows can connect generation stages into a repeatable pipeline. Web, iOS and Android are documented access routes, with feature availability varying by interface and model. Compare generated shots on the same brief; choose a recording editor when the job is cutting an existing interview.

When it fits

Useful for

  • Prototyping a generated shot or reference-led B-roll
  • Connecting established generation stages in a repeatable node workflow

Limits to consider

  • Transcript-first editing of an existing spoken recording
  • Applying an Enterprise no-training promise to an unreviewed consumer account

Capabilities and platforms

  • Gen-4.5 supports both scene-and-motion text prompts and reference-image-to-video generation.
  • Tools, Apps and Agent offer different direct or conversational generation interfaces.
  • Workflows connects generation nodes into customized creative pipelines.

Where it runs

  • Web browser
  • iOS app
  • Android app
  • Developer API

Access and setup

Account with credits and the selected tool/model entitlement; web subscriptions and API arrangements require their applicable access and billing terms.

Current access and pricing
  1. Sign in at app.runwayml.com; the starter guide recommends Chrome for the web experience.
  2. Choose Tools for the first test and record the selected video model instead of treating Gen names as plan names.
  3. Select text-to-video or image-to-video, review available settings and credit consumption, and prepare an authorized prompt/reference.

Proposed exercise · not hands-on tested

A single motion shot from an owned illustration

Input

A synthetic illustration of a paper windmill on a plain table; the requested output is a landscape clip with a slow orbit and gentle windmill motion.

  1. Open Tools, select a supported image-to-video model and upload the owned illustration.
  2. Describe the camera orbit and blade motion; choose available duration/resolution and inspect credit cost before generating.
  3. Review the result in its Session, adjust one motion instruction for the next comparison, and keep the chosen clip with the model/settings recorded.

Artifact to inspect

A proposed short clip suitable for a subsequent edit, contingent on review; this workflow was not run.

What to verify

Watch the full shot for changing geometry, unintended objects, camera jumps, temporal artifacts and a usable entry/exit frame.

Data handling and permissions

Runway’s usage-rights help allows commercial use and does not require attribution, but that statement does not clear third-party input or output rights. The platform may invoke a selected partner model, so record which model handled the reference rather than infer the processor from the Runway name. Its Enterprise partner-model FAQ describes contractual no-training commitments for customer inputs and outputs and account administration that can disable individual partner models. Those protections belong to the relevant Enterprise contract; they are not evidence of identical consumer-plan or separately negotiated API protection. Review the actual account’s sharing, retention and processing terms before uploading a confidential production reference.

Other options

Higgsfield
Compare preset-led or multi-model short-shot production.
Descript
Use transcript-linked editing when the input is an existing interview or explainer.

Sources and scope

Documentation-based; not hands-on tested. Features and policies are vendor statements checked against primary documentation on October 2, 2026. Fit, alternatives and the synthetic workflow are editorial proposals, not measured outcomes, quality rankings or legal clearance. Model, plan, regional and account entitlements may differ.
