The full sequence fits the entered deadline before additional overhead.
Retry waits exclude the attempt execution time. A call that succeeds stops the sequence early; all-attempt bounds assume every attempt runs.
How this result is calculated
Each retry wait is min(initial delay × multiplier raised to the retry index, delay cap). The maximum elapsed time adds every per-attempt timeout and retry wait. Full jitter chooses a delay uniformly at random between zero and the capped wait; the table shows that range, not simulated random outcomes. The planner flags a policy whose full attempt sequence can exceed the caller deadline.

How it works
Each retry wait is min(initial delay × multiplier raised to the retry index, delay cap). The maximum elapsed time adds every per-attempt timeout and retry wait. Full jitter chooses a delay uniformly at random between zero and the capped wait; the table shows that range, not simulated random outcomes. The planner flags a policy whose full attempt sequence can exceed the caller deadline.
Follow the example
Four 500 ms attempts and waits of 100, 200 and 400 ms have a 2,700 ms upper bound. That exceeds a 2,500 ms caller deadline. If every original request uses all four attempts, 100 original requests can create 400 calls over their retry lifetimes. That is a volume bound, not a prediction of peak simultaneous traffic.
What to account for
This is a timing model, not a retry implementation. Propagate the remaining caller deadline and stop or shorten attempts when it is exhausted. Retry only appropriate failures and operations that are idempotent or protected against duplicate effects. Account for server Retry-After instructions, connection setup and retries in other layers.
